OK, I know it's bad to speak ill of the dead, but in that film Daleks Invasion Earth, Bernard Cribbins' character referred to The Doctor as "Doctor Who". Which is just wrong. Even at such an early age I was a right pedant and I remember being shocked by this. His name isn't "Doctor Who", it's "The Doctor" or just "Doctor". It's not like his surname is "Who". That would be stupid.

I still remember it clearly. I never really recovered.

EDIT: He also played my favourite character in Fawlty Towers as the Spoon Salesman.
I forgot about that. A brilliant episode. 'The hotel inspector '.

RIP Bernard.
I used to natter to a bloke in my local spoons sometimes.
First time I met him I paused at some point, looked at him, and he said: "I remind you of Bernard Cribbins" don't I?
yep i admitted as the penny dropped.
said this happened a lot and it bothered him.
I think perhaps he saw himself as more of a sex god than amiable Bernard.

edit - just seen post above - I stress that this wasn't the real Bernard Cribbins in my pub having an identity crisis.

To be fair to Cribbens and indeed Roy Castle in the far worse earlier cinema outing, they only spoke the lines wot wer rote.

Whilst we should perhaps celebrate rather than mourn a long and well live lived life I'm still sad to hear the news. He was an excellent character actor, far more than a stock character, perhaps exemplified by his genuinely outstanding performance as Donna's grandfather in Doctor Who. He brought a power and dignity to what might have been a rather minor character if played by someone without his talent. I never met him but it seems he was a genuinely nice guy too.

I leave you with a fun Doctor Who related anecdote from the man himself
cribbed from IMDB

  • [on Doctor Who (1963)] I didn't actually audition. But when Jon Pertwee was leaving, producer Barry Letts--who died quite recently--interviewed a lot of actors, one of whom was me. I went along and sat down and he said, "Now, then, what can you do?" I said, "I'm a very good swimmer, I was a paratrooper, I could fight"--and he said, "Oh no, no fighting no, the Doctor is never seen fighting at all!" So Tom Baker became the next Doctor, and one of the first things I remember him doing was knocking somebody out.
He was maybe a contender for the Doctor himself it seems. Baker was of course great, but Cribbins could have pulled it off too I reckon.

I would tend to agree with you but the producers of the show might not. The character was named in the closing titles as 'Dr Who' for the first four doctors. It's only when it gets to Peter Davison that he becomes 'The Doctor'. This bothers me.

And of course there's the actual title of "Doctor Who and the Silurians". This message from Planet Geek in the constellation sad and lonely

Hmmm. Actually reading down this thread I think it was Roy Castle, not Bernard Cribbins who traumatised me by referring to the Doctor as Doctor Who. So Bernard is off the hook for that one. ISTR the Daleks wanted to hollow the earth out and use it for storing Dalek teabags or something.
