The pincers simply measure rim wall thickness on each side of the rim in two separate measuring exercises.....the hooks are completely out of the equation. One might need to experiment as to where exactly underneath the hook one needs to apply the pincers, but it doesn't take long to get a feel for the right position.Am I being thick here? Probably . But how is(are) the width(s) of the rim hook(s) taken into account?

Of course it can only measure above the box section of enclosed box-section rims (see @andrew_s's images above) - on these, the rim wall of the box section may be thinner than what you're measuring, but one wouldn't know. So iwanson gauges are useful but not the infallible whole answer.
