(His DIY rim tapes were fine for years but then suddenly they weren't! He got through his spare tubes and one of mine in a couple of hours before giving up and catching a train home from one of my forum rides! I realised when I got home that he could have ripped the valve out of one of the punctured tubes and used that as a temporary rim tape but I didn't think of it at the roadside.)
