Right side crank arm for 90s bike

What do people do when they go to the cycle shop .need a part, and realise it costs more than the whole bike?

My scenario, i have a nice dawes bike , reynolds 500 frame, very lightweight, only cost £45, it had been running fine for months. Then pedal came off right side.

Because there are only 2 gear cogs on this bike, it has 12 speeds in total, shops don't stock this type of stuff any more, and it is a £60 part, had it been the left side that had gone it costs under £10 to fit a new one.

I'm even thinking of just putting a bolt in the way to hold the pedal on, i can't see the pedal falling off again with a bolt through it, i don't want to spend £60.

Not really looking for much advice, just seeing if others have had this scenario, where they really like the bike but the part is dearer than the original cost of the whole thing.

Also got a Giant, almost complete bike, with 2 quick release wheels for a fiver yesterday, loads of rust, but the 2 quick release wheels are worth more than £5 by themselves.

Absolutely. Classic ebay. Just one thing to watch out for - make sure you get the right one for your bottom bracket. It's probably a Shimano square but it could be a Campagnolo, or even something a bit odd, in a bike of that vintage.

Thanks for the replies.

I've decided to go a different route, take the Giant bike apart [it's a ladies bike] 54 cm frame [i'm above 6 ft], and turn the dawes from a 12 into an 18 speed.

I felt at £5 it's a good way to learn how to dismantle a bike and move the stuff to another bike.I've taught myself quite a bit of bike repair stuff, but i'd never done a crank before.

The only thing i don't plan on taking out is the bottom bracket,i've taken the crank apart on both bikes and both look the same where you have ball bearings and then the bottom bracket.
I'll then move all the cables and levers around in order to turn it into an 18 speed.
