most likely the peds didn't realise it was a shared path and were making a point (all to often a catalyst for dispute) of trying to show you, you shouldn't be there.

Problem is there's no polite way to stop and educate them so its best to let it go and move on with your life,

But as others have said you have no priority, in fact it is agreed that all vehicles need to look out for the more vulnerable users.. which in your scenario, is the ped

I always default to the navigation rule, power yields to unpowered (power to sail), and vehicle to pedestrian.
They may have been deliberately lame but they were on foot. In a more serious encounter there would probably be legal implications. On a few occassions walking on shared paths, I've had morons on bikes pass me from behind, inches away, at speed.

Do I need to get the spray plaster out?
The cycle path round here is shared, I am a bit bell shy, I tend to just cycle really really slowly until they notice me, then they generally apologise & move and I generally say no it is fine, which it is I am never in a hurry to get anywhere and having tinged my bell once when first first cycling and nearly given one of the aging population heart failure as she jumped out of her skin & nearly fell in the road, I have a slight aversion to tinging my bell now.

Recently though I have solved my bell shyness, as User76 received a lovely wooden harmonica at the Local Nature Reserves 20th birthday party, she now plays it loudly in the trailer and so everyone hears us coming!

The strangest thing I have had happen on a shared path, is man walking towards me I moved he could pass with lots of room, and he yelled lots & tried to tell me I should be cycling the otherside of the white line... this pic kind of shows better than I can tell
