Hello everyone,

This is my first post. I've been riding for just over a month now and just wanted to know if I'm doing ok or need to work a bit harder!!

I'm doing 50 miles without stopping now about twice a week, working shifts makes it a bit difficult to go riding more than twice.

Anyway my times for the 50 miles is averaging 3 hours 10mins, my average speed is 16mph.

I've done a couple of 30 milers when I havn't the time and that's coming in at an average of 1 hour 45mins, my fastest average speed is 17.7.

Oh by the way I have a Giant Defy2 which will get a pair of Fulcrum 5's tomorrow with Pro3 tyres.

Thanks
Simon :wacko::smile:

Sounds v. quick and quite a long way to me, for somebody only riding a month. Congrats - you're obviously dong something right  Careful not to overdo it though!

Your times and mileage are very very acceptable a month in Simon.

I'd say listen to your body...watch out for overdoing it. There again, if you're young and fit, you're probably more than capable of getting more out of yourself.

Sounds like you're enjoying it

i'm a newbie too and have built up to 30 miles, but my 30 mile ride tool me 2h33m (12mph), but that involved about 400ft of climbing around west yorkshire.

Still as i said on the running thread i was a plodder when i used to run, and it seems i'm a plodder on a bike too

No, that's perfectly all right. That's not plodder speed for a month at all (probably 2 or 3mph above it).

Im glad Im not the only plodder then:smile: I was beginning to feel; a bit out of place here with everyone focussed on time and distance. I am riding for fitness so want to push it a bit but al;so to be able to enjoy the scenery along the way.

Absolutely. I struggle up the hills so that i can take it a bit easier on the flat so that i can take the views in.

Welcome ! Impossible to comment without all the variables -- climbing, conditions, etc. But it sounds like you're doing fine. Get enough rest. "Horizontal training" is the most important part of adapting to workload.

Thanks guys for the info makes me feel good, must be fit after all lol!!!

The road that i'm using is mostly flat with a few short hills. The hardest thing is trying to avoid lots of traffic!!.

You're hanging around the wrong places. Come and chill out in the Tea? thread.

The only obsession I have with time and distance is "How far to the cafe, and how long will it take to get there?";)

well i've been back on the bike since last October, after ten years of doing no real exercise what so ever. my fitness level was rock bottom and i was at a point where i was feeling really run down so needed to do something.

so far I'm up to the 35 mile area before getting uncomfortable and my average is stuck around 16 to 17 mph.

i have noticed a definite improvement in my ability to climb the hills and i've lost around a stone in weight, so I'm happy with the way things are going.

I'm not competitive at all and apart from the fitness side of things i ride for the simple reason that i enjoy it

I'd say your doing well in your first month ;)
