If the tube is sticking out then it needs binning.
It depends on the kind of riding, distance or short/mid distance commuting.
Commuting or mid distance, I had a similar gash on a Gator, I inserted a 2 inch strip of emery tape, rough side to the tyre...it lasts for ages and stops the tube squeezing out. You have to replace it every couple months but thats no biggy and I kept an otherwise good tyre going for months and months. Emery tape is good because its free to me, its tough and its thin, you dont feel it at all as the wheel rotates.
For longer rides where id want reliability, I'd replace.

I've also used a US Dollar Bill as a tire boot. Indestructible.

I would keep it, I've got loads of them on mine (although mine are gatorskins), no problem at all in my opinion.

That you have shown it here shows that you are worried about it which is not an tdeal state of mind when bombing down a hill. I had a similar situation recently and in spite of advice here I kept it but the thought of a burst tyre slowed me down so I binned it and bought some cheap and cheerfuls from Planet X (the best place for tyres).

It's a Continental, it was rubbish before it left the factory. I don't buy their tyres anymore after bad experiences in the past. Maybe the more expensive ones are better, but the Ultra Sports I had possess the cut and puncture resistance of a processed cheese slice.

The 'Grand Prix Supersonic' ones are even worse

I normally superglue the splits , a new one could also get cut on its first outing.

Earlier in the year I got fed up of Conti GP4000S;s getting ruined through gashes etc, and after ruining two brand new ones, I decided to fix the second one which got a gash in the side wall causing the innertube to bleb out. I simply cut a piece of an old tyre which covered the hole by a good margin, as you would for a tyre boot but using rubber solution from a puncture repair kit, stuck the patch to the inside and smoothed it off with a couple of layers of duck tape. Stuck the tyre on the back and after about a couple of thousand miles its still going strong.

I've tried supergluing cuts etc in the past and its only a short term remedy and they soon open out again through the flexing and water etc and for a hole right through the tyre, not worth the risk

At the moment I'm riding on Maxxis RE-FUSE for winter and they seem very good and hopefully if they can handle the mileage and the punishment of winter roads, I will use them all year round as I find them as fast and as grippy as Conti 4000 and a lot cheaper
