Spoke with Spacycles, sadly the Roux Etape 250 is not my size. (Am 6') Have asked Evans to get the Dawes Cross AL in for me to test ride, speaking with mechanics there and "Wheelspin", local firm told me triple chain sets don't work on road ??, so started looking at Pinnacle Arkhose 1/3 and Whyte bikes. So many tourers out there that have triples, puzzled.Am now going to ask Evans to get in a Ridgeback 2017 Explore to compare side by side. Like sound of Ridgeback now. Confused, beginning to question some of the advice given in store?

I think that not all front mechs are compatible with all triples, which may have been the source of the statement, perhaps.

If in doubt, consult Sheldon: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/front-derailers.html

Basically the mechanic in Wheelspin was telling me they were unreliable and prone to faults. I know it's inadvisable to cross extremes but found his answer puzzling. Thought perhaps pushing their own stock?

Sorry about the Etape. 'Triple chainsets don't work on the road'. That's the first time I've heard that. Unreliable? Very odd statement. I'm sure they're trying to push their own stock. They say on their site they want to 'give great service and great advice to people'. Doesn't sound like it.

Just take things easy, have a look at the Dawes and the Ridgeback (also good bikes) at Evans and see what you think. We can bang away on here about how you need this or that but there's nothing like a hands on experience. Good luck.

Utter, utter nonsense if that was the statement! I started running triples in the early 80s & have never experienced a failure (BTW, if you now see a bloke with a broken triple by the side of the road...)

Have you looked into getting an e-bike? These are getting increasingly common and cheaper these days most have adaptable settings so you can select how much assistance you want it to give you

Can see the benefit but do want something more traditional, need to get back to some quality of fitness.
