Polystyrene has far poorer mechanical properties than that of bone. I remain to be convinced that that a helmet would prevent serious injury. If you are going to get a fatal head injury it will happen whether you are wearing a helmet or not.

Until someone can prove this beyond guesswork, I am going to continue to wear my helmet. I'm still glad that we have the choice, however, and if you choose not to that's fair enough.

With the very greatest respect, do you feel that an incident severe enough to crack a cycle helmet wouldn't have caused at least some skull injury had a helmet not have been worn?

Im saddened to hear of your accident Mick and I wish you a speedy recovery... Glad you are back on your bike again!

Glad your OK dynamick and great to here you are going back on the bike. Must take some guts after a shock like that.

Re the helmet debate I am glad its voluntary but still usually wear one.

The proffesional association that A and E doctors belong to suggest they are a good idea. I am sure there are pros and cons to them just as there are for seat belts ,airbags ,condoms or any other safety kit.

Whenever the subject comes up the same tiny but vociferous minority will tell the huge majority that were all misguided..

As for the woman driving off maybe she panicked or something ,still deserves to go to jail IMHO..

Im sure it has, but whatever your viewpoint, im sure that bone (and its owner) feels pain more than polystyrene ;)

I wear my helmet too, but the evidence out there supports the fact that helmets will only protect against relatively minor impacts. It just annoys that me people seem to believe that a cracked helmet means that they have been involved in a catastrophic impact - that is uneducated guesswork. Hell, I've had loads of pretty "big" crashes, and only once broken a helmet.

Conduct your own experiment... get a cycle helmet. Repeatedly hit it with a blunt object until you find an applied force which is enough to break it, then decide whether you would like the same type of impact applied to the top of your head

I've 3 cycle helmets thanks. And I'm not going to bother with poorly thought out primary school physics experiments. Perhaps you could start providing some peer reviewed publications of helmet testing, rather than irrelevant experiments.

Honestly, did this thread need to descend into yet another helmet debate? It's petty and inappropriate and, as can always can quickly end with a simple phrase 'its down to individual choice'

Glad you are okay and getting back on the saddle

Oww...bloody hell..only just seen this thread. Shame that some people just can't take responsibility and help victims of their own recklessness.

Driver was probably either drunk, disqualified or similar

As for the helmet..well, my helmet shattered from my bike falling over with the lid jund on the handlebars but so what if it didn't stop a split skull...if it even just stopped gravel rash in the scalp then that's it's job done.

As above, individual choice and if it even helps gain the confidence to get back in the saddle then that's a bonus.

Oh dear, this old piece of rubbish

....................now repeat with a coconut shell, mango and other fruit - thus proving that we should all wear fruit on our heads?

lol yup - sucks for me having an opinion.

I apologize for agreeing with the OP about "The reason you SHOULD wear a helmet" as stated in the topic title.

Whatever your choice RE helmets, it IS only your decision and no-one else's afterall

If I recall correctly, it's the OP that turned it in to another helmet debate by telling everyone to go buy a helmet.
