Being bored at work was killing me. I'm enjoying a finer variety of boredom now.

My next door neighbour has been retired a few years. I told him I was retiring and he said: -the thing is, when you have a job you get days off. When you're retired you don't.

Like my Dad - used to say my hair grew in work time so I got it cut in work time but now I have to get it cut in my own time!

People who have the option to retire early are very lucky.

My late f-i-l lied about his age to join the army at the age of 15, spent the early years in India then when the war started, after a short time as a lorry driver, fought in Europe, including evacuation at Dunkirk. Went to to the coal mines until retirement at 65, then had a fatal heart attack just weeks into his retirement.

Early retirement was a luxury he would have deserved.

Its true we are lucky. Perhaps society should be organised differently so other people don't have to work longer and longer.

The best advice I ever heard from a Financial Advisor was that everyone has a switch inside their head that for most of their life is set on "Accumulate", at some point there comes an option to set that switch to "Spend" - and far too many people continue with it on "Accumulate" for too long.

Once that point is reached, the only reason to stay working is if the work itself is intrinsically interesting or has a great societal value.

I'm forever grateful that we had the option to knock work on the head early and feel for folk who need to grind on and on.

Many people just have a switch set to "Survive".

Yes, I was very lucky to be able to earn enough to save some. Not a luxury available to the millions on zero hour contracts, minimum wage, in expensive privately rented housing, unemployable...

Yep. My mum was similar. Had a hard life. Her marriage to dad wasn’t great with a lot of friction over the years and eventual divorce. She worked hard and deserved a happy retirement but got lung cancer and died at 62. Another reason I had no qualms about retiring early.

It does seem wrong that those who start work youngest and work for less pay (generally) end up working not only the longest but to a significantly older age than the soft handed middle class.

Am I recalling correctly that the French state pension entitlement is based on a combination of age and length of working life? Start work at 16 and retire earlier than someone who is a student to 25. ??

On the other hand I have paid a lot into my pension over the years. Some who had the same opportunity as me didn't bother do not all down to luck but as with anything in life there is an element of luck.
