You can guarantee that any newspaper article about health issues will be a gross simplification. However, halfway down the article, this direct quote is unambiguous:-
""The available evidence does not fully establish resting heart rate as a risk factor, but there is no doubt that elevated resting heart rate serves as a marker of poor health status," added Dr Zhang."

Your RHR has changed. But a RHR of 57 is not, in itself, an indication of fitness. It is equally possible that someone fitter than you could have a higher RHR. Equally, someone less fit than you could have a lower RHR.

Agree. But would you also agree that a change in an individual's resting heart rate was an indicator of a change in fitness?
