I can do 30 miles without anything specific, I rode to Wakefield and back yesterday (just a short 22 miles), and didn't even touch the water (but then it was pretty cool). I do usually have a few flapjacks in my pocket though as you never know what's going to happen, and the thought of anything upto a 15 mile walk with the bike with nothing isn't a pleasant thought.

TBH, unless you really are thinking of racing, it doesn't matter that much how often you stop. If you need to and feel unwell, stop and rest. Most sportives have about 2 to 3 feed stops which is about right for the average joe over the distances. Main thing is you enjoy the ride out. The more you ride, the further you will go without needing a stop. Well done for riding further than you have before.

If riding over 2 hours I'll take a couple of gels, more than that I'll take enough gels for 2 an hour (from the start) plus a banana, mars bar etc for a quick 5 minute stop about every 25-30 miles. As for drink, I seem to sweat A LOT! I sip Maxifuel viper from my camelbak every 2-3 miles. In the summer I have emptied the camelbak (2 litres), re filled it from my bottles (another 1 1/2 litres) and still run out before getting home about 5-6 hours later! I drink lots! !!

50 miles is the practical maximum for me, but on longer rides I prefer to stop at around 30-40 miles.
However watching Milan-San Remo, clearly it is physically possible to do 300km without stopping. But only for the super-fit.

If out on my own I don't stop, but if with others/the club then a stop or three is compulsory. Club runs go like, meet at cafe, ride to another one, then ride back to the cafe !!! Good stuff.

Now't wrong if out on a run to stop for a coffee/break/enjoy the scenery. There is a place for serious training, and having a nice run out.

Did my longest ride to date today at just over 32 miles as had a rare day off on a sunny day!!

Just wondered how often others stop for a break when cycling?

I was drinking every 5 miles or so but doing so on the move so I just kept riding. I must admit the last 5 miles was tougher than the previous 27

I had a bowl of porridge and plenty to drink prior to setting off but should I be looking to eat something while out and take a break at that sort of mileage to keep my energy up?

Only been cycling around 3 months btw so a total novice
If your looking to progress and get fitter then this is a distance that does not require stopping, unless you only have one bidden and need to fill it up. You can also always take a couple of snacks in the pocket to eat as you go. Generally most elite riders should be able to do 100 to 110km training on no stops… where as others might want to get a more substantial stop about half way if doing that distance. If you looking to race…. the race does not stop for a break….
