Firstly i'd like to say hi to all, I have a specialized allez 2008 triple with a broken front derailleur. I've removed the part but i'm struggling to find a replacement compatible 8 speed derailleur. Can anybody help?

I am guessing it's Shimano components.
So any triple front derailleur will do

One thing I've always been unsure about here, though............is a 9/10 speed front triple derailleur cage NARROWER than an 8spd specific one and thus likely to be even more prone to chain rub and adjustment difficulties if used in an 8 speed set-up?

I only ask because...as the op points out...there are very limited choices now for decent 8spd components, but oodles of 9/10 speed options. I for one am a bit wary about not replacing like-for-like and it would be nice to have chapter and verse or reassurance on it.

I've not noticed any particular extra chain rub on either of my 8sp bikes. Both have Sora triple front mechs. I'm very keen on keeping a good chain-line though.

If you found it a problem then fitting a 9sp chain would probably fix the issue.

Shouldn't matter if braze or band. You can buy an adapter

What if the band-on front mech's clamp clash with the bike's braze-on? ;)

the derailleur is separate to the clamp mechanism

EDIT: i understand what you mean. I built my bike the other day where i took the fd from a bike that was braze on to band on
