Bloody Hell Andrew... moths??;)
It was on my work bike, and I hadn't changed gear for 4 or 5 years. The rear mech had seized up so I couldn't. The route was flat enough that I didn't really need to do anything about it, so I didn't until it stopped working. That's what I found.

How new is the wheel/free hub ????

Errr ... not very ;) ... it's new to me though
I figured that if the free hub didnt slip when running on all the other sprockets why do it on the 15? Am I missing something Fossy? BTW it slipped when using downtube shifters too ( they're new bar end now )

Just in case anybody ever encounters this problem ... new cassette came today and lo and behold no slipping. I compared the new 15 tooth sprocket with the old one and as far as I could see it looked identical apart from some very slight wear. You were correct Chris, the sharks tooth shaped cutaway wasnt a chip so the LBS got it wrong which is why filing it off made no difference. It was clearly damaged in some way but I really cant see where especially as the chain was engaged with 12 or so teeth at all times ? The moral being when every other possibily has been dismissed. what's left must be the problem. Thanks to all for the advice , now if it ever stops raining I can go for a ride........
