OK the story is that I have a year old SCR 2 with a cracked frame. It has gone back to the bike shop who have contacted Giant, they have replied saying they do not have any SCR frames and offered a complete Defy 3 as replacement.

My problem is that whilst the Defy 3 is around the same price as my SCR was a year ago, the spec is somewhat lower (for instance Sora instead of Tiagra drivetrain and shifters).

My gut instinct is to tell them that I want the Defy 2.5 which is more of a like for like swap, but is suppose I am getting a brand new set of sprockets etc and could get all the shifters and mechs etc changed over, and its going to be a 3 week wait:wacko:

Advice would be appreciated

I'd ask for the better bike.
At worst they can only say no.

+1 state that they along with most this year i think have increased their prices and it should be a like for like swap! get stern in the letter! they may buckle.

Send them an e-mail,on the lines of how much you liked your previous bike, but it had a better spec. And how dissapointed you are that customer satisfaction seems to be lower on their priorities. And you are of the opinion that the 2.5 is THE bike nearer to your previous one.

And don't give up send a couple more if they don't agree first time.

If you highlight the spec differences they'll surely see you're right. You've got nothing to lose so I'd go for it!

Could you keep us updated on your progress? The frame on my 2007 SCR 1 cracked today on the way into work. All around the top tube, seat tube area. I've written to Giant as I expect a replacement too as it's only 18 months old.

If it's a complete bike on offer, then I'd agree, a Defy 2.5 is what you want.

Any reason they can't supply a Defy frameset?

(Defy is a jolly nice looking frame - the daft sticky up bit of the headtube (the inch or so above the top tube on the SCR frames have gone, for one thing).

OK update on this, I only got the frame and forks and all the components are being swapped over today and this is what has been found so far

The seat posts are different diameters
The brakes off the SCR will not line up with rims when on the Defy frame
The Defy will not take full guards with Marathon Plus tyres

Arghh!!!!

Strange, mine cracked in exactly the same place, around the seat tube into the top tube
