Replace a chain, why?

I must admit I don't know what type of gears he has and I don't know when I will next see him to ask. I don't think he did any of his own maintenance on his bike, although I assume he did occasionally oil it.

Maybe I should just leave my bike as it is as an experiment to see how long it will last, although, considering the grime that I sometimes have to cycle through I don't think it would be long!

I've got a 12 year old 531 frame with 8 speed campag mirage on it. I've ridden it plenty in all weathers although probably not particularly hard. It's all been cleaned, looked after etc. but the only things to have been replaced on it are bar tape, pedals and tyres. I used it fairly regularly this winter while I waited for me new commuter/hack to be built up and it's still going strong as ever. Amazing things bikes - a little love goes a long way.
