A quick google revealed several in Windsford as well, I bet there are one or two in Northwich also.

I would go for cheap powder coat over a stove enamel for £95 quid.

They seem to be highly recommended for re-coating, I wonder if they do the stripping as well? I will give them a call in the morning to get some details on the services they offer and how much it will cost. They certainly seem to be the best option to go for at the moment and I will keep you all updated after I contact them.

I will also hold off the actual purchase of new components to the time being, although a new brake set couldn't go amiss as the current ones are pretty poor.

I have just got off the phone after calling J Wilkinson's to ask about the powder coating service they offer. They said that they do quite a few bike resprays and they can strip the frame and forks and powder coat them for around £60 which is quite good. All I need to do is disassemble the frame and take off the components that don't need spraying, I will probably need some help in figuring how to take all the bits off and putting them back on and whether I need any special tools to do so.

I will most likely end up getting the frame done sometime in the new year when I have the cash ready. In the meantime I will try to make it to Supreme Cycles in Crewe to check over the frame and make sure it is structurally sound and worth keeping.
Whilst the bike is being sprayed I will take the opportunity to clean up the various moving parts and give them the once over and decide what might need replacing, apart from the brakes which know need to go.

Sounds very reasonable - when you get the BB and headset off look for rust within the frame where water has got in. If so then just swill some Kurust in the frame - you might as well do the whole frame for peace of mind.

I have done a quick Google search on how to remove the cranks and bottom bracket and found this and this, both excellent tutorials on removing the cranks and bottom bracket. It seems that my cranks are held on with a female-threaded tapered spindle which has a hex head bolt visible at the base of the cranks. In this case it seems I need a special crank puller tool to loosen the bolt such as the one below.

The only issue with a local powder-coater is that you cannot have the transfers re-doing like say Jackson's could do. No worries if you just want a plain hardwearing finish.

Old Holdsworth lugs... suggest it's a 1950s 'Cyclone Deluxe' Road Frame as that was the only frame these special spearpoint lugs were used on.

She was in a far worst state than yours when I rescued her from a garage for £5 in about 1982. Cheap re-spray job and replaced all the steel bits withn Alu (except seat post) and still have the original Mafac 'Racer' brakes. Crudely converted her to fixed around 1984 and apart from a brief fully-loaded cycle-camping tour of France she's remained a fixed for most of her life. Now mostly a turbo-mule due to the fact that in the last few years the forks have grown quite a twist! I must really get some new ones.

Lovely ride though, just sweet. But the frame is sooo beaten!

Lots of Holdsworth info:

I am not too fussed about the decals on the frame as most of them are damaged beyond repair, the frame number at the BB is close to coming off totally. I realise I can source some replacements for the headtube badge and the top tube stickers but not for the bike name on the downtube and the BB sticker.

http://www.hlloydcycles.com/pdflistlatest.pdf scroll down a bit

The service provided by Jackson's will also cost around £60 more than the local sprayer which for me is quite considerable and if I can't get replacement transfers than I don't see any point in paying more.

I was thinking that Jacksons maybe able to do a similar style of transfer job. Of course the head-tube decal would be hard to come-by. You'd get 531 transfers though.
Originally I was going to get mine done by Holdsworth with original colour and decalling. I was a student at the time (on a grant - remember those?) and it wasn't the extra cost in particular, but the extra nickability in the poly bike park which prevented me spending the extra cash (had already had 1 bike nicked there).
Now however I regret having the full restoration job.

It's up to you what you do - it's a nice frame. I'd personally have it enameled. Costs more but it much nicer.

There is Atlantic Boulevard in North Manchester who, by all accounts are very good.

Pretty sure Rourke has it's own paint shop. The Liverpool company mentioned above will be C&G - that's who painted my Herety 20 years ago from new..... they do a fab job..........

Atlantic will do the transfers and have it made up like original - again it will cost.....

Just picked up on this thread, as I'm considering having my aged but much loved MTB resprayed. The Bob Jackson site looks interesting and fairly priced for the level of service.

Does anyone know where I would source Saracen transfers and decals. Goggling around doesn't seem to produce anything too precise.

I got 2 quotes for getting my reynolds 531 vintage dawes galaxy re-sprayed this week. Both quotes were coming in at £120 which included the sprayer supplying the paint etc.

I also got a quote to replace all the decals (i.e. a total of 7) designed exactly to the original format for £20.

so inall to do the bike to its former glory is going to cost me £140-150.

The sprayers are professional body repair techs so they say tou will get a top class finish.

Don't know about you but I think it is quite exspensive as it is their time you are paying for. But how long really would it take to spray a bike frame and forks especially for experienced sprayers.

Sounds Like a fair price to me. I had my 93 Galaxy resprayed early last year by Mercian, I had it resprayed in enamel with only the Reynolds 531 transfers. It cost me £100. On their website they list all the processes that the frame goes through, it's not just a simple case of splashing some paint around. I'd guess with a bike frame being quite a complex shape that it would take a bit of time and skill to ensure a complete and even coverage of paint.

All in all most companies offering an enamel respray quote around the £100 mark.
