Leverage is the key , In the past I would use a metal pole slipped onto a spanner .

how does it go... pedals vertical, foot on the lower pedal, spanner on high pedal, pointing towards rear front of bike (thanks colin), pull up on spanner, keep bike on floor using pressure from foot on the lower pedal (you should be leaning over the bike). Doesn't matter which pedal you're undoing this way... but you might benefit from a longer spanner.

You are just testing us, aren't you - that tightens up the pedals!

I remember it as the right side pedal having the 'right' thread (tightens clockwise, as usual) and the left side has the 'wrong' thread (tightens anticlockwise).

yes you're right... spanner pointing towards FRONT of bike to undo... doesn't matter which pedal you're undoing though.

"Back off" is how I remember how to do it, spanner on pedal facing back of bike and push down

I use an ordinary 6" spanner: put this on the pedal, pointing horizontally towards the rear. Hold the pedal with the ball of your foot and put your heel on the spanner. Transfer your weight to your heel to loosen the pedal. This will work for both sides, as the LH pedal has a LH thread. You do not need a special spanner.
