I had a new crankset, new BB bearing and new crank extractor tool. Took the plastic bolt covers off ... No (or hardly any) sound thread to see in there. Gave it a try ... the extractor bolt simply pushed itself back out.
I used to have a crank extractor and gave up with it due to the same exeriences as you've had.
I use a big gear/pulley puller I normally use for removing pulleys and bearings from large electric motors.

Well that sort of 'work' can be very 'therapeutic' (as a change from being careful/considerate regarding parts etc), but I reckon that once in a 10 year period is enough for me ... :angry:
