Carbon post to an alumiium frame. It has been 'welded' in the same position for a few years now.

Has anyone had experience of removing one? I'm thinking of using a long (12") hacksaw blade to cut down the length in the seat tube.

Nothing else will shift it as far as I can see. Any suggestions and advice welcome.

p.s. Will I get cancer if I saw carbon?

Caustic soda - but you'll need an awful lot of it to melt all that aluminium away from the seat post.:hello:

Are you two saying that these chemical methods would be better or easier than my sawing idea?

Is sawing a bad or ineffective idea per se?

I take it that brute force has been tried. Post clamped and frame turned for example. I hold my hands up and will say I know bugger all about chemistry. The sawing option will work but may not be the best.

Have you exhausted all the other options on Sheldon's repertoire?

None are specific to carbon/ali interface except maybe the convoluted clamp method at the end which he used for a recently installed carbon post in a carbon frame.

Caustic is a no-no, I've tried brute force including putting the seatpost in a vice and putting considerable twisting force on the frame but it felt as if the frame welds would pop first.

Then hacksaw it is although with it being carbon fibre, a hammer and chisel might be easier/quicker than sawing it out and less likely to damage the inside of the seat tube.

Rich it wasn't carbon frame but the doctor had a similar problem and I know he resolved it,can't remember how-might be worth a PM

I don't think it would be possible to get a chisel that far down the tube and if I'm careful I suspect sawing through the carbon will be relativley easier than accidentally sawing through the ali.

Cheers Grace. It's an aluminium frame and a carbon seatpost. I'll PM the Doc!

How about stuffing a load of ice cubes (or maybe 'PR' spray from a physiotherapist type of person? via a nozzle to the inside etc) around the seatpost and hot water bottle(s) around the frame?

Maybe Ape but I'm not sure how the 'weld' between the two materials works. It's not like a metal to metal join.

Rather than trying to twist it have you tried hitting the top of the seatpost with a mallet as if you were banging it into the seat tube. The sharp shock might just be enough to break the seal it has on the tube and then you can gradually twist it out.

Might be worth a try.
