I make soup all the time, chuck everything in a pot and let the flavours develop over time - add seasoning (not salt) as you go.

But each to their own I suppose.
I've always enjoyed making soup, but I can honestly say the soup made in the machine is as good as that made the traditional way. In fact, for some reason none of us can fathom, the leek and potato is much, much better!

Soup was too acidic. Added some sugar and nutmeg, which seemed to tone it down a bit. Trouble is, since I'm trying to lose weight, don't want to add too much sugar either!

I'm sure your home made soup will be better for you than the canned stuff, soup machine or no soup machine:smile:.

Potatoes or porridge cooked in the old fashioned way, on the hob, tasted terrible to me without the addition of salt , but when cooked in the microwave I find salt unnecessary.

Edit. Sugar added to home made soup? Eeeeek:eek:

I'm a bit wierd, I've never liked salted porridge. Ususally have it with something sweet like banana or with cinnomen.

Chips is going to be hard. I make my own oven chips, I use plenty of salt and then (this is my guilty secret) I have them with lashings of bisto gravy! What am going to do without Bisto on my chips?

Bisto will most likely contain sackfuls of salt. Have a gander.

I had very high blood pressure last summer. Just a routine check, no symptoms whatsoever.
Rather than going on tablets, I reduced my salt intake.
Results? After 2 months, I had the blood pressure of a 30 yr old!
I still take a salt substitute (lo salt) on my veg but nothing else.
After 2 weeks I not only didn't notice, but I found 'ordinary' food tasted so salty I couldn't eat it.
To me, a tin of chicken soup tastes as if it has about 4 or 5 spoonfuls of salt in it. I was amazed how quickly my taste buds adjusted.
I was also shocked at just how much salt there is in processed/tinned foods.
I've now become the pub bore with my 'evangelical preachings'

I've never been keen on salty foods. I use salt in scrambled eggs and in the bread machine - less than the recipe suggests, though - and nothing else. I don't buy many processed foods so hopefully I'm not getting much from there either.

I'm sure you can retrain your tastebuds to manage without.

Sugar will be good in tomato soup it takes away the bitterness of the tomatoes, if I'm using shop bought bolognese sauce I always put a pinch of sugar in as I find it too bitter.

Hi Sara, you may find my experience with sugar helpful.
When I was young, I used to take lot of sugar. This was purely because I grew up in house hold where sugar is consumed in large quantities and I never knew any other way. I used to take about 2-3 spoons of sugar with my tea and coffee. One day, when we were having tea at work, one of the colleagues commented about my sugar intake. She said, the problem is that I have never tasted the coffee or tea as I drink syrup. My tea, coffee or chocolate will taste the same. I agreed. So I gradually started reducing sugar. Over one year, I stopped taking sugar in my drinks completely.
It had effect on other food stuff as well. I now can't eat icing on cakes, dust off sugar in doughnuts etc.
So my suggestion is that, take it slowly.
