What, you mean that bit about it being FUN?

Some people just aren't ready for fun, by the look of it...

You jest, but...

When I was doing tryout shows with Company of Cyclists, we often had Universities as venues. And you could count on some academic (usually) coming out and pointing at a microbike or something silly we'd borught along for a laugh, and say "and what's the rationale behind that?" And we'd say, "well, it's just a bit of fun..." and they'd look really confused... As if a machine had to have a 'function'. As if 'fun' wasn't a function in itself...

Are most recumbents 2 or 3 wheeled? How do you stop at lights on a 2-wheeled recumbent?

Yes, most recumbents are 2 or 3 wheeled. I'm sure someone built a recumbent unicycle, but it's not caught on the same way...

(There are of course, 4 wheelers, like the Brox, they tend to be load carriers and such like)

Seriously, it's funny that you felt the need to ask about the stopping at lights thing. Would it ever occur to you to ask that of an upright rider? Did you think maybe 2 wheel recumbent riders strap themselves in at the start, propped against a wall, and then have to keep going until they find another wall to stop against? I'm not having a go, it's just interesting that you felt the need to ask - show how just a little unfamiliarity can fox even the smartest brain... It was similar on roadshows, people ask the most basic, seemingly obvious questions, just because it's a bit different....

Cheeky git.
I somehow imagined recumbent riders being 'encased' by side panels...a bit like an F1 driver, or something.

No, but it's one of the more upright recumbents...

Maz - sorry! We can't help being superior...

It is funny though, how people react. I've had people ask if a trike is hard to ride. I say "can you sit down". "er yes, I can". "Can you turn your legs?" "Er yes...". "Then you can ride this!" - but somehow they think it's going to require some difficult additional skill. Some of them seem amazed that it has brakes and gears and so on...

Why? I mean they are not really bikes are they.
Whats the appeal?
Seeing them on the road they look bloody vulnerable, due to the low profile.
Enlighten me.

There are some things in life that can't be put into words. Different people like different things and it is only possible to express you own personal opinion about what you think is the best type of music, women, beer, women, bikes, women. etc.
I don't think anyone can enlighten you as to the appeal of recumbents. You either see one and think "I'd like to try one those" after which you would know it they have any appeal for you, or you see one and think "what's the appeal in those?"
When asked "why do you cycle?" by one of the car-bound lard-arses at work, I don't try and enlighten them because there would be no appeal to them because they priorities are so different.

Turned in to a bit of a ramble this but if, on seeing a recumbent you think why? then I doubt if they would hold any appeal for you. I have a trike and I also have a normal folder and I don't know which one I will use until I open the garage door. Both machines get me to work on time - over eight hilly miles there is little difference in the time taken as I'm slow on both but if I'm in a good mood it has to be the trike. But that's just my opinion.
