If you're on a very tight budget I recommend buying a couple of these and mounting a couple of poundland torches to them.

Surprisingly bright, robust and quick release but without any flash functionality

The torch also comes in red.

just bought the flash/flare from exposure, the front light flash, isn't the brightest however, but the flare is a different beast, you can see this beauty a mile away, awesome light set...
Hi all,

Thinking of getting some front and rear lights and was wondering which ones you have experience of and would recommend.

I prefer the blinking/flashing lights and ideally light in weight and as small as possible without becoming ineffective.

Any recommendations ?

Ah that light looks great. The only bad thing about the poundland ones is the beam isn't spread veyr well at all, infact it's very focused. Thus using them it's harder to be seen fron the side unless you slant them slightly to the left or the right.

Thanks guys. I think I will go for the Smart Lunar 15 - seems a good balance between functionality and battery life

I'm just looking at lights atm, and was about to order the lunar 10 set (I expect to use mainly lit roads so shouldn't need it too bright), when I realised I've got a gorillatorch sat next to me

I paid about £20 for it I think, really good bit of kit. It might work as a bike light for now (my one has red and white leds, static or flashing) and it attaches to almost anything.

Just a thought for anyone who wants a multi-tasking light. I'll try hooking it up when it gets dark and let you know if it works.

Hope LED 1 - 240 Lumens, hunt around on the net but you should get it for around £60. Uses 4 AA rechargeables and will last 2 hours. I use this for off road and its brilliant literally, no battery packs and wires! Watch out for those Chinese P7 lights the claimed 700/900 Lumens are not always correct.

I've been very pleased with my Cateye lights.
Cateye TL-LD 600 led rear light around £15
Cateye opti cube (non flashing) was around £50. Great for seeing with on the tracks in the dark

Smart 1/2s on the rear (I have 2) and use a Raleigh RSP 6 as my "main beam". I also have a Moon Gem 2.0 in the panniers at all time as an "emergency backup" front light. If you're just after being seen then this will probably suffice - it's USB rechargeable, deceptively bright and only the size of a matchbox.

+1 for the Cateye lights...

I've got a single shot on the front, which is bright enough for unlit roads and is rechargeable.. It cost me about £60. On the rear I've got the ld610, which is very bright; I was impressed enough to buy one for each bike. They're on offer at wiggle now for £15.

Whatever you do, avid Magicshine.
They are nowhere near the claimed brightness (verified in the MTBR bike light shootout), they fall to bits and the batteries and chargers have a habit of exploding.

Of the main brands, I would rate Niterider as being the most accurate in their output claims, followed by Hope, Exposure and Light&Motion in that order.
Cateye are ok for commuting.
Chinese manufacturers like Kfled and Fluxient are better value. Good performance, well designed and made, and reliable. They will cost a fraction of the price of the main brands.

I disagree, I've had two magicshines for over a year now and there still going strong, used every commute, day or night. The alleged problems come about because of poor maintenance by users, there not as forgivving as more expensive lights.

It does not matter that they do not meet their stated brightness, they are still extremely bright and for the price good value for money.
They do know have a competitor called BikeRay.

+1 on that BRSU

Had mine since last December and it is still working fine, has not exploded in a ball of fire etc etc.

Maybe they are not 900 lumen as claimed but they are a a lot brighter than a lot of lights you will pay up to twice as much for, you will find most lights are listed with output for "best case scenarios " anyway.

I can ride on unlit road with total confidence
