Hi, I'd like to think I'm a reasonably fit soon to be 60 year old, been cycling for ages (but not a fanatic) and am about to treat myself to a new hybrid bike for road and gravel tracks in the £500 to £900ish region. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the range available but I have some basic requirements: 1. Hydraulic disc brakes 2. Can fit mudguards and rack 3. Gear sprockets to match my old Dawes Tanami in the ranges 48 to 28 (front) and 11 to 35 (derailleur). Any ideas? I fancy e.g. a Boardman Team Hybrid which looks good except I'm not sure the gears would finish me off on hills or be a hit slow on the flat. Cheers. .

The boardman is a good choice with a good range of gears for both on and off road, the 50t chainwheel combined with the rear gearing will give you plenty of speed on the road and the 34 -32 combo will get you up just about any hill you care to tackle (within reason), I have the road version of the boardman and it is a fine bike at a very good price.

Cheers. Gearing is my main worry, for the hills. The Boardman's lowest ratio is 34 to 32 cogs front to back whereas my current bike 'bottom gear' is 28 to 35. That 35 is probably too low but I do seem to use this on Dartmoor.

You won't go wrong with the Boardman, but another you could consider is a Pinnacle Lithium from Evans.

Quite a large range, but many have a triple at the front and a wide range cassette at the back to give the low gears you want.

Very versatile frame, lots of clearance for tyres, and plenty of bosses for a rack, mudguard and crud catcher.

I'm impressed with the ride of mine which is surprisingly comfortable.

Could be a good choice if you want a bike at the lower end of your budget.

If I had your budget, and wanted a hybrid, I'd seriously consider a good used Trek 7.9FX .... full carbon frame and very comfy/fast

Have a look in your LBS , they may just have a bargain old new stock waiting to be snapped up at this time of year , I got a full carbon road bike 1/2 price , a 2015 model , slight mark on it , my birthday -xmas treat to my self !! , its worth a try , for 500-900 you will definatly get something ,
I also like Merida's , and its been said before they have some input into Specialized ,

A bike shop has suggested a cyclocross/'advanced road' type as alternative to hybrid, more road/touring like geometry and wider gear ranges e.g. Merida CX 300 and Specialised Diverge A1 Sport, both at around £800. All new to me but what I've read makes them sound attractive. I haven't ridden drop handle bars for years but used to be comfortable with them. Any thoughts?

I'm also a fan of boardman and have just got the cx team bike, worked out the gear inches on it and it has a lower 1st gear than the road bike which is good for the hills. Also has a higher top gear which is also good on the roads. Build quality is really good and mooseracer has got mudguards on his and has mounting points for a rack.
