They are higher at the back so don't slip down and expose your lower back.
Some people prefer waist shorts some bibs just wear what's best for you?

in the old days pre lycra they held the shorts up better , these days apart from more material to stop a cold back i dont think theres much in it these days assuming the pad / material is the same .

Re. Bib shorts some of the mesh "braces" are very comfortable and you can hardly feel them.

Re value bib shorts, it may be worth looking at Vinted?

Assuming the thread is on mens shorts, the Altura bib shorts I have are ones with a very high front making pit stops that bit more awkward, having never mastered the leg opening method of relieving oneself. Hence they are relegated to short rides or indoor trainer use. Agree mesh styles straps, provdied they are an appopriate length for you, are virtually unnoticeable when worn.
