Just to provide the outcome to this thread, I finally plumped for one of these £10 turbo trainer tyres from Halfords.

I've used it a few times now, and have no complaints about it's performance. It does what it says on the tin. It was initially quite noisy compared to the previous tyre I was using, but after half an hour or so it started to "bed in" and has now quietened down quite a bit.
It seems quite robust (i.e. no flaky bits on the floor) and grips well, with only slight slippage occurring when on the highest resistance setting and sprinting hard.
Time will tell on how long it will last, but initial impressions are very good for a budget tyre.
Thanks to all for your input.
