Recommend me a helmet camera..................

Never thought I would but hey ho, don't want to spend silly money so no Go Pro3+ and the like.

Must be a bullet type for helmet mounting as I've no desire to look like Po ;)

It will only be used for my own pleasure, (ooh er mrs), no commuting, no traffic droidyness, no naming and shaming.

Rides of around 2 - 3 hours are the norm so battery life may be an issue.

Come one cammers, sort me out as I'm going blind looking at the 1000's of options out there :surrender:

I'm looking for something similar....I was considering one even before the 'flasher' incident, but now I definitely want one!
I can't help but I'll be watching with interest!

Hi
I think you are going to struggle.
Budget? and does it need to be waterproof / rainproof?
I posted a similar thread recently. I wanted a cheap 1080 bullet cam that was waterproof.
Unfortunately, it appears none of the cheap ones are decent. www.techmoan.com has really good in depth reviews of lots and lots. I don't know where he gets the time. He has several reviews of cheap bullet ones, including the SJ2000 and another similar one, but both are let down by how they handle varying lighting on the road.
I've just ordered a SJ4000, which is a GoPro clone, but £60 and comes with lots of mounts and a waterproof case and is supposed to be really good. Battery is only 70 minutes, though, and it unfortunately is the box shape type, which I didn't want.

Maybe upto £100? Waterproof may be overkill, but even as a fair weather cyclist at least weather proof would be advantageous in the UK ;)

The battery life is no use for me with that one, and I'll forget about it all together before I go for a boxy one :stop:

I'll keep my eyes open, I might even just plop for an ebay jobbie to test the water with, then if I like the whole cam thing I can always upgrade when funds allow

They are all pretty much going to be ebay jobbies for less than £100, if you are looking to buy new. Do check out the reviews and sample footage on www.techmoan.com before you buy one, because some of them are pretty useless in anything but ideal lighting conditions.

Looks the part, and the mount looks OK as well, (some look really cheap and nasty), but it's a bit over my budget just now, and there was a CC'er having some issues with a Road Hawk IIRC, but I just can't put my finger on him right now.

[EDIT] it was @mick1836, he was having issues with battery life as mentioned in the last post HERE.

Just remembered this one from Jessops, I purchased it months ago for £10, fine for short commutes and batt life about 2hrs

If you want to make out all plates you need 720p or above pref 60fps

I use a Mobius

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mobius-Ac...rofessional_Video_Cameras&hash=item232c961f6a

41 quid

There is a big community support as its used alot by RC aircraft/drone people.
There is a helmet mount online as well as a waterproof case.
You need a 32GB Micro SD card 1080p video is big 1GB for 10 mins
Battery in this is 70-80 mins max
You can power with an external USB battery pack but you need a way to mount it all.

30fps is fine, also 24fps/25fps are fine. 60fps is for making great slow motion videos but does not help with reading plates, in fact for the Sony AS100 30fps is better than 60fps as the frames have more detail.

I find that if a car is going past fast, you are more likely to get a frame with a readable plate at 60fps but indeed 720p60 can often lack enough detail yeah it's a bit of trade off.

I currently have mine set to 1080p30

Most mid range cameras will do 720p60 or 1080p30

if you want 1080p60 then you need a good GoPro and 64GB SD cards.

Or an Sony AS100 and any SDXC card will do.

I have used the 808 #16 cam previously but for bike rides but it was useless as I couldn't be bothered to faff around with routing cables for an external battery connection, and without it I'd get 20 minutes at best, unfortunately that died by my hands so I'm waiting on a Mobius now. It looked like the next best step up.

I was debating on whether to get the helmet mount, but I've got those silicone 'bandage' band straps from China that I've found to be fantastic for adding things to the bike.

I can vouch for the DogCam HD camera, I bought one after a van driver almost hit me (punched me), however stopped using mine after I failed to catch the moronic BMW driver who wrote my old Merida off.

Records in 720p, was a narrow angle, as couldn't afford the wide angle, but picked up registration plates and other bits incredibly well.

Flasher incident @ScotiaLass ???
