Been gone a while but I'm back!

It's been over 6 years now that I've been commuting to work (mainly flat, 6 mile cycle path) & my company has now joined the cycle scheme so thinking of getting a new bike.

I started out with a cheapo bike off ebay, a diamondback Eastwood. It got me started but I fancied something better! So I got a good deal on a carrera subway from halfords & loved it! I felt really safe on it (I don't like skinny tyres!) but unfortunately it was stolen.
I replaced it with a ridgeback speed which is fine, just not as good as the carrera.

So I'm looking for a bike without skinny road tyres, that can fit mudguards & racks (preferably front as well as back) & preferably a flat handlebar so I can fit a light, camera, computer & bag on (I'm hoping to go camping on it!)

I can buy from Evans, chain reaction & wiggle. That said, would a carrera subway still be worth getting?

I'm useless at this! Ask me about gadgets & I'm your man lol

Go along to Evans with photo ID and a bank card and test ride suitable bikes

Could look at CX/adventure bikes as well as flat bar hybrids

Don't focus on the deal, focus on how the bike feels to ride

How much are you wanting to spend? If going C2W, make sure you fully insure the bike. If it gets nicked while you are still in the 'hire' period, you will still need to make the payments

There a evans cycle in newcastle near the metro centre and also a giant dealer up in prudhoe.

Also worth a try is westbrooks in stokesley or stockton cycling in ingelby barwick or evwn go outdoors on portrack while the sale is on.

CX disk brake bikes are ideal doitall bikes for added touring capability. You can fit a barbag etc using Rixen and Kaul/Ortleib mounts. Details to check are
-brake mounted on chainstay
-full rack and 'guard eyelets inc fork crown brake hole.
Note the Subway now has 27.5 wheels so check availability of commuter tyres in your local bike shops.

If you go to Evans make sure you test ride a HOY Shizuoka 1. I had a go on the pinnacle first and thought that was good but then tried the Hoy which was even better. Think they are just under £500 now and I think you can maybe get them to reduce it a few quid if you explain your on a budget.

As others have said though you must test ride yourself and see what suits you.

In the North East theres also an Evans and a halfords at the Arnison centre in Durham.
For commuting I'd always recommend mudguards and a rack as standard kit.. Im a big fan of hub gears and dynamo lights for hassle free all year/weather commuting.

Other than that what is best for you depends on terrain, surface etc

Can you get to any of these:

Paul Curran cycle sport in Stockton (does planet London road)

Stockton cycling and running in Preston Farm

Bike scene in Guisbrough

Yarm cycles in Yarm

There is also a cycle shop in Normanby which I can't remember the name of but he is good too.

Skinnergate cycles in Stockton

There is also the bike shop in Stokesley high street.
