Went mountain biking today and my friend chain snapped.

I had some chain links in my bag but no chain splitter (we were in gisburn Forrest), absolutely chucking it down with rain. Tried everything, but could not get the pin out. We started walking back and luckily bump into some other cyclist. I asked if they had a chain splitter and he did. They saved the day!

Anyway, looking for a chain splitter on eBay, lots of different ones. Not sure which I need (it's for my road bike, cannondale six, shimano 105 groupset) and a trek fuel ex8 mountain bike.

Thanks all

I've got one on a Crank Brothers multi-tool. It isn't quite as good as a dedicated tool but it does the job and I have all the other tools with me as well. I have repaired 3 broken chains with it and installed at least 4 or 5.

I'm currently using one of THESE one at home and it does the job admirably. I also have a multi tool I take out with me that has one built into it, it works well enough but I wouldn't rely on one for all chain jobs

FWIW I used to just have a really cheap one for years, and in a DIY environment it was fine for years, It finally gave up the ghost when I got more into building and restoring bikes though.

Oh I also have one in a LIDL/ALDI tool kit, but that ones made of cheese

The Park CT-6 is a beautiful piece of kit. Collapsible down to Swiss Army knife size (75mm x 22mm x 20mm) it works as well as a shop tool. Park stopped making them for a while because of the cost of the stainless steel that went into them, but they are back again, now called the CT-6.2. There is very little difference between the original and the new. These really are excellent pieces of kit.
