Recently managed to lose my high viz Altura jacket.

Rarely wore it in the city as it's far from cool looking - you look like you're about to dig a road in it but it was effective.

So I used it when touring, when out and about on country lanes as gloom started to fall.

Also in road tunnels in Italy (a legal requirement) and mine was a nice size so that it would also fit over a small camelback.

So need to buy another.

But since it does look rather like an industrial jacket, I wondered if there are good sources for (single unit purchase) of industrial/workwear stuff which will do the same job.

Would be handy if like the Altura (can't complain about its quality) it had two colours for day time visibility (Altura is orange and yellow), nightime reflective strips of course, preferably also zipfastening.

I wold think workman type jackets would be highly boil in the bag for cycling and the wrong cut

You could look on eBay though

I don't know which Altura had two colours? Hi viz isn't really about looking cool ultimately - they do a black one with lots of strips, might be better when you're on the hipster fixie with your drain pipes

Well that's the idea Greg - as Vickster rightly says, it's about being seen, not squashed by that Humvee/ speeding country tractor/over-enthusiastic Italian in a dark tunnel.

Will it actually prevent that from happening? If they ain't looking they won't see you no matter what you wear. (He says for bitter experience)

Reflectives, amply applied, I find very pleasing in the dark, nice bright reds and blues and whites and black, natural colours one and all, give a nice contrast to the road background but day-glo? xx(

You might want to look at the Polaris RBS range. Nothing to do with banking, they're Really Bright Stuff, a combination of fluo yellow and orange with plentiful reflectives.

I picked up one of these a few weeks ago and really like it. They are very bright and highly breathable. I did a hill climbing route last night with it fully zipped up and no issues of over heating.

Why a hi-viz jacket? - Everyone has one. AKA they then don't stand out.

Me, I ride in black jacket, black leggings with ... hi-viz gloves and overshoes.

Yep - all you see in the reflection are the feet and hands :becool: - but it seems to work.

Doh, it's fairly self evident from watching cyclists at night from inside a car, that a high viz jacket stands out hundreds of metres away, while by comparison, a colourful but conventional coat doesn't... There must always be drivers who will ignore the safety of cyclists but equally, don't go making it harder for all the common or garden drivers to see you!

Rubbish. Reflective bits and good lights make way more difference than the colour. It's that time of year for me when it's not quite light in the mornings so I use lights. Some other cyclists are doing the same and can be spotted from a long way off, much further away than people with no lights and yellow jackets.
