Rear wheel - random dull pinging sound - what is it?

Just started this morning. Is this likely to be a spoke that's lost its tension, or could it be something else?

The wheel is a little out of true, but I've never had any pinging before.

Is a complete collapse of my rear wheel imminent?

Cheers,
Shaun

my wild guess is spoke tension, the wheel is recently out of true and some poor spoke is taking extra strain, I'd get that to the LBS for truing/tensioning sharpish if you can see loose/tight spokes

Probably unlikely, but I would check the rim for cracks. I had this over the weekend and when I investigated, there were cracks in the rim.

Thanks for the advice - I'll get it looked at ASAP! ;)

(Luckily I kept my old wheel-set so I can pop my old one on for a wee while.)

tight nipples?

Are your nipples discolured? They might need some kind of lubricant, to prevent them going solid. A drop of oil on each should help

Possible bent rear hanger? (Fallen over/dropped bike/crashed recently?)
This would cause a clunking noise for every spoke it passed though, so would be clunking at a machine gun rate

Dropped it into the LBS for a service and he true'd the wheel whilst he was at it - pinging gone, so I assume a spoke on one side had gone slack because it was out of true.
