my wild guess is spoke tension, the wheel is recently out of true and some poor spoke is taking extra strain, I'd get that to the LBS for truing/tensioning sharpish if you can see loose/tight spokes
Possible bent rear hanger? (Fallen over/dropped bike/crashed recently?)
This would cause a clunking noise for every spoke it passed though, so would be clunking at a machine gun rate
Dropped it into the LBS for a service and he true'd the wheel whilst he was at it - pinging gone, so I assume a spoke on one side had gone slack because it was out of true.
