Cycling to work this morning, my rear wheel developed one of those mystery noises, when sat on the bike I could hear a creak as the wheel rotated, but dissapeared when I lifted the bike off the ground and rotated, closer inspection revealed a small crack in the wheel rim, will this mean a new wheel or can it be repaired ?, hoping to cycle through France in July to see a bit of theTour......great timing !

My thought, having a lot farther to go to get to France, would be that I would not stake my holiday on the efficacy of a wheel repair, but rather I would get a new rim, or wheel. It rather depends on the size of the damaged area, and a lot of other factors, but on the face of it, without pictures, I would say you would probably want to be on the safe side.

Yes I agree, the crack is right on the rim where the brake pad makes contact about 1 cm long , but will probably get bigger , I am just trying to avoid the inevitable cost, although i do have a spare rear wheel in the garage but not of the same quality, will give it some thought
Thanks from Mark

Honestly Wheels/Tyre/Brakes are not worth skimping or taking a risk on.

If it went at a crucial time then it has potential to get quite nasty.

Is the crack circumferential or radial? If it's the former it'll be down to rim wear, a consequence of using rim brakes and means it's time for a new rim. If it's the latter, is present on both sides and goes the full height of the rim, it'll be where the rim is jolined and not really anything to worry about.

I discovered a similar crack in my rim on the day I was meant to be watching the Tour last year. Fortunately a friend had a spare bike.

under closer inspection in the sun outside that crack only appears to be a deep scratch I have probably done this when removing the wheel somehow, as for the mystery noise , I think it could be spoke related....what deep financial relief !

The rim looks new. Give the scratch a buffing out with some wet and dry.
