Rear wheel alignment. Dropout - axle play

Hi,

My rear wheel is not properly aligned and so I'm occasionally getting some wheel rub.
This is on a Scott CR1.

The wheel is properly dished, but it seems that there is too much play in one of the rear dropouts where the axle rests on the dropout. It seems like the dropout is too wide for the axle.

So when I tighten the QR it pushes the wheel slightly to one side.

I'm probably not explaining this very well - any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like something is bent.

It is not uncommon for dropout alignment to be a little off like this. If it is a new bike, you should probably return it. If not there are a couple of solutions. Firstly and simplest, just be a little more careful putting the wheel in. Tip, most of us put the wheel in with the bike upside down. Once the bike is upright again, loosen the skewer, push down on the bike, and tighten the skewer again. That is often just enough to set the wheel correctly. Other than that, it means filing the dropouts to have a more steeply radiused curve, but it is a painstaking and skilled job to get right.

As I read it it sounds like the gap between the dropouts is too wide.

The gap should be 130mm from the inside of one dropout to the other inside so check that with a ruler.

If that is ok then a washer or something is probably missing from the hub making it too small.

Either way I would simply try to add a washer (or even two washers on either side) inside the locknut to make the axle width fit the frame
