Looks like you will have to snip half an inch from the topmost stays. They are usually quite hard so decent bolt cutters would be ideal. Is it possible to adjust this, so that there is minimal equal clearance on the full length of the mudguard?
If so, what do I need to? If you look at the pic you will see what I mean

Yes- 315mmAre both arms of each stay the same length?
I have a saddlebag attached to the seatpost, so no room on thereWould that rear light not be better positioned on the seat post so it points more horizontally ?
Yes, the stay can move a bit and then tighten the adjuster up, but I've tried that to no avail- it's in as far it will go now. It was my LBS that fitted them, but thought I'd ask on here first, in case it was something dead simple I was missing. I think I'll just take it back there before taking Mo1959's adviceThe barrel shaped bit at the end of the stay, is that some sort of adjuster to move them in and out?
See pics from rear- I think it's more pointing towards car drivers, than skywards. I do have another light fitted to saddlebag. Can you turn the light upside down? Looks like it might be more vertical if you could. Failing that could you fix it to the seatpack. Not a lot of use pointing skywards. I have the samre problem on my winter bike. I managed to find a neat German light/reflector combined that fits on the mudguard, but it is not very powerful. There are a lot of lights around that are designed to fit on the seatpost, but not many that fit properly on the seatstays.
Yes, as the op says. So the obvious answer is to trim a bit off the stay then fiddle with adjuster for the fine tweaking. The barrel shaped bit at the end of the stay, is that some sort of adjuster to move them in and out?
