A couple of Blackburn Mars 4.0s won't break the bank and work well for an urban commute. Most importantly, they won't fall off.......HELLOOOOO CATEYE!

Blackburn Mars 3.0 and 4 The new 3.0 no longer needs a screwdriver to get to the batteries. I'd still be using my 4.0 if I hadn't broken the case by accident.

Smart R2 are good although a little prone to moisture ingress (silicone grease the joints). RSP Astrum also good, but I've had two brackets fail through road vibration.

Moon do some crackers also - not too expensive and very bright !

Top end is the Hope District or Dinnote 400R = expensive.

I'm running 2 C&BSeen rear lights - they run off the same batteries as the T6 lights and are about £30 each. Well worth the money and insanely bright. Lots of options with flash settings. They are juice hungry though, so regular battery recharges needed. Also Magicshine 818 are very bright.

The golden rule at the back is to always have at least 2 good lights. You can't see them once you're riding and if one fails the other keeps you visible and legal.

Round-town bike has a dynamo Smart + Smart R1 (very bright) + Smart superflash (bright and obsolete)

Tourer - used a lot on unlit country roads - dynamo B&M Toplight + 2 Blackburn Mars 4 (very bright)

I used to use all Smart battery lights but the clips have broken on several. Changed to the Mars as a result. Got them from here.

The Mars lights received plenty of compliments from other riders on the overnight EE ride in August so they seem to work.

fossyant mentions silicone grease on Smarts. I put a smear of silicone grease on the seals of all lights, dynamo system connections, and anything else electrical which might get damp or wet, front and back. I've never had a water problem with any of it.

Thanks all for the advice; found a Smart at the LBS and gone for that,, it'll be the main flasher with the existing little one as the legal constant.
