The Cateye LD1100 makes a good, bright back light (it's unpleasant being stuck behind someone with one!) though it's on the pricey side. Otherwise, I've run the Smart 1/2 Watt Superflash for 3 years in all sorts of conditions and never had any problems. A little vaseline on the seal helps with waterproofing - though I've never bothered doing that. The Smart Polaris 3 is another good light - it's less directional than the Superflash or Lunar so might be useful to run it as a second light to maximise your rear visibility.

I use a Magicshine MJ-818 and a smart rear light was told last winter my rear light was too bright  , At least he saw me

I have got a lunar R1 but I have a problem with it as it wont stay on. Is this a common fault as I love the light and would consider getting a couple more but need them to be reliable. At the moment I don't trust it as my main light so my 2nd cheaper one has taken over being my primary and its not that great. £13.99 for a new lunar I wouldn't mind getting a couple if they are normally fine.

Cant take my current one back as I cant find the receipt

When you have put the batteries in and checked the lights are working, put a strip of waterproof insulating tape round the join.

Take it apart. Zap the switch with WD40. Let it dry out.

Then do what Adrian said.

My position remains, you presumably could have dropped back.

I had a choice of actions true. I had borne the pain for a few hours, reached the end of my tether, and took the lazy option. (hangs head in shame).

the other two lights on the bike were more than adequate for south of Faygate without the death ray.
