Rear jockey wheel hitting spokes

I'm messing about with an old MTB over the winter to learn some bike maintenance I've just taken off and refitted the rear mech.

Jockey wheel is now banging against spokes on the biggest sprocket.

Do the hangers need realigning or do I use the limit screws to adjust?

If the chain is not coming off it will be the Hanger. Just give I tug so it is not touching but not to much as I will knock it all out of line.

Your angle of dangle screw needs adjusting.

Or you cross-threaded it when you screwed the mech back onto the frame. Don't ask me how I know this

What exactly do you mean by that?

The sprockets do not have spokes.

Are you saying that when the chain is on the biggest sprocket, the lower jockey wheel is contacting the spokes?

If this is the case, then the derailleur is misaligned. The cage should be perpendicular to the axle - or parallel with the drop outs. Photo below shows this but is not the best.

The reasons are either there is wear in the derailleur or the drop out is bent. It is possible the derailleur is mounted incorrectly - see above comment about cross-threading the mounting bolt.

The angle of dangle screw - or B stop screw - sets the distance of the top jockey wheel from the sprockets - unlikely to be the cause of your problem.

I assume you have set the top and bottom end stops so that the chain sits on the biggest and smallest sprockets wihout any attempt to skip off them.

Thanks. Lots of great info from you folks.

As it turned out it was the top of the jockey wheel hanger hitting the sprocket, not the spokes. Adjusted the angle of dangle screw and all was well.
