Is it possible to just buy and change the cage on a rear derailleur?

Possibly. Shimano give the part number of each part of an assembly on their techdocs. Once you have found it google it. Be aware that the vagueries of UK buyers and marketing means no one stocks spares. I once needed a reach adjuster knob off a deore brake. Outside of Japan only one website stocked it, bicikli.de try them if it's Shimano

what make/model of derailleur? For sure you can buy SRAM X0 cage and get replacement (in carbon fibre ) for the outer cage; it may not be possible to dismantle hte inner cage on some make/models.
