I was wondering about upgrading/renewing my 2 yr old Sora rear derailleur and saw that there isn't all that much price difference between Sora (about £15) Tiagra (about £24) and 105 (about £27). My bike has a 9 speed cassette.

However, my bike has Sora ST3400 shifters - 9 speed with the side button release - and can't see whether they would be compatible with the Tiagra or 105 rear derailleurs. The tech docs seem to demand at least 105 or Dura Ace shifter for the 105 derailleur.

Any idea whether I can pop a Tiagra or 105 derailleur on using these shifters please ?

Thanks in advance !

If you look at the spec of some road bikes they do give a mix of groupset.
I have Tiagra Shifters (9 speed and Triple) with Ultegra Derailleurs for 9 speed and triple.

I will do some more digging and see if I can find the mix you are after.

Anyone else done this? Sora Shifters - Tiagra / 105 Mechs?

Mix of Tiagra (shifters), 105 (RD), Ultegra (FD) and Sora (chainset) on my winter bike..... oh and an SRAM cassette for luck
Never had a problem.

The only things you need avoid are 10 speed Dyna-Sys MTB mechs, and really old Dura-Ace.
All other Shimano rear mechs will play nicely, as they all have the same cable pull.

Not much difference at all - Tiagra is only 60% more, and 105 is a mere 80% extra, for something that does exactly the same thing.

I wish you were my customer / I could afford Shimano's marketing
