Hi,

I did the wiggle rut ride yesterday. It was windy and I think a substantial twig or some other bit of a tree got caught in my rear derailer. It still indexes left to right OK, but the jockey wheel cage doesnt spring back to hold the tension on the chain as it should. Seems like when it took a knock the spring mechanism has somehow com adrift. Is this fixable? See vid to see what I mean...

Hi it looks like it has been squashed together some how and also twisted "is it fixable" - maybe if you know what your doing if possible have a look at another bike to compare how it should look

Probably...... just check whether the tension spring has become dislodged. If the spring is broken and you can get a spare it's still repairable .... but may not be economically viable. My guess is the tension spring just needs hooking back behind the retaining lug......also possible that the retaining lug is broken, which will necessitate a new derailleur.

Seems that a lug has broken off the spring, number 7 on this diag. http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/media/t...RD/EV-RD-4600-3151C_v1_m56577569830775436.pdf

It meens that there is a propriety fitting that has to be removed, and is also rivited in so a repair will be as costly as a replacemement (thnks shimano).

Question now... Do I replace the 105 with like for like, or go for the new 10 speed tiagra so I can have the larger rear cog for the dragon ride?

Im thinkin like for like.

Can you remove threaded pin 8 on the above diagram.
Shimano and more manufacturers are building more redundancy in their products - Very green (not)
(Suntour didn't do this, I have as few of there mechs going strong, but they couldn't compete on price and went bust, shane) alternatively look at Microshift or Sun race brands in stead of Big S

What chainset? A compact with a 28t cassette should get you up most hills! No need for circus gears!
