rear and front tires

I have just bought replacement tyres , when I ordered them I got front and rear.
My question what's the difference ?
As they look the same

Some tyres use different compound for front & rear, supposedly to get optimum combination of grip and minimum rolling resistance. I had some once. Front is still running on my hack. The rear was binned long ago, wore out very quickly.

Mine were definitely tyres though.
Further explanation here, but honestly cannot recommend those. Puncture resistance was excellent but grip in the wet was not good, and the rear only lasted 1500 miles, by which time it was pretty much down to the fabric in the centre.

Some tyre 'sets' will have a wider rear tyre - the size will be written on the sidewall.

I've just wrestled a continental gator skin onto my front tyre, and i'm now too tired to do the back tonight as working early in the morning, so i will have gator skin up front and a ultra sport on the back, just can't face messing with the back wheel tonight
