Sigurd the Mighty, a formidable 9th century Viking earl of Orkney, met a bizarre and gruesome end that seems more fit for legend than history. After a victorious battle against a rival clan, Sigurd strapped the severed head of his enemy, Máel Brigte the Bucktoothed, to his horse as a trophy. However, as Sigurd rode across the battlefield, Máel Brigte's lifeless head swung back and forth, its protruding teeth grazing against the earl's leg.
The wound from the teeth became severely infected, likely due to the unsanitary conditions of the battlefield and the decaying head. Despite his power and reputation as a great warrior, Sigurd succumbed to the infection, his life cut short by the very enemy he had defeated.
