The Use By date, now common on nearly all perishable goods was invented by Al Capone.
It came about after one of his family became ill after drinking milk that was off. He decided against knocking off the supplier, and decided to delve further into the milk distribution.
He found shady dealings and very little regulation in the supply, storage and delivery of milk. So with prohibition ending, and a fleet of trucks at his disposal, doing very little he lobbied for the Use By Date to be introduced, as he entered the milk market.
