The Men of Kent were the only lot to face down William the Conquerer. Williams boys started invading Eastwards into Kent, and the Men of Kent were having none of it. The big brawny farmer types armed themselves with a motley assortment of agricultural implements and went to face William's lot.
The two sides met, and William was so impressed by the steely eyed determination of the Men of Kent that he agreed to leave them alone. Instead he raped, pillaged, and generally took the pith out of the Kentish men instead.
To this day some of the 'oooo aaarrrr' types still regard Kentish men as almost second class citizens, and there's quite a prestigious Men of Kent association.
I'm only a Man of Kent by an accident of birth, but I'm very proud of it and still feel a certain affinity and closeness with the Eastern side of the County, though I have no plans to ever move there.
