Lighter weights and quicker reps (as mentioned above) to tone up, not bulk up.

You need to do more anaerobic exercise to get the heart beating quicker and thus burning more calories: try fartlek (lit. speed play) = running at intervals for positive results. http://running.about.com/od/trainingessentials/f/fartleks.htm.

Skipping (2 x five minutes a day to start with) is also a very effective way of toning up and losing weight.

What?

My bad. I used the wrong word. I meant to have leaner muscles, as opposed to having big muscles.

I stopped playing rugby at the age of 34 (tighthead prop - 6' 1", 112-115 kg - mostly muscle - neck size 19.5", chest size 48"), but not wanting to become flabby, I still did cardio and fartlek training, and ate and drank more or less the same (but without the stupid amounts of Guinness at the rugby club after a game or training), and trained with lighter weights and quicker reps. I was also a hod carrier at that time, so burned many calories, whilst having a good 'work-out' at the same time.

Within a year I was under a 100 kg. I still have the strength but without the bulk of before, and have found that summer cycling helps me maintain a shape and weight I'm happy with: or at least for being 53 years old.

It's just the winter months that the weight piles back on (Norwegian winters and SAD) that throws a spanner in the works.
