Reading glasses rant! Why I now prefer a monocle

I've only had my latest pair for a month or so. In fact I think I bought them just before Christmas, so it'll be a month since I spent £7.50 on a pair of Foster Grant reading glasses. I've just got home to take them out of my coat pocket to have a look at stuff on CC, to find yet again one of the arms has broken off! Sometimes the little screw comes out, meaning unless you have a spare one knocking about, which is highly unlikely, you might as well bin the spex, unless you're ok wearing them with just one arm which means they tend to fall off when you look down to read a book, or to tie your shoe laces etc. This is one of the reasons I now wear a prescription monocle, as In worn with the cord around my neck, with the monocle at chest height/length for easy access when needed.🧐 With a monocle you don't have to search for your glasses through endless pockets to find them and you can't sit on a monocle like you can with reading glasses, or just lose them which with me often happens. Do you use reading glasses and if so, what do you think about them, as in standard of quality, cost, losing/breaking them etc? 🤔

I just bought a 3-pack of cheapo Aldi specs for under £3. At that price I don't really care if I only get a few months out of each pair!

What are the scores on the doors, Isla?
When my left eyesight worsened and started suffering eyestrain, a new eye test, prescription and specs were the solution.
Makes me think that correcting only one eye (ie using a monocle) wouldn't be my most comfortable option.

Why don't you get a strap for them and wear them around your neck?

I've discussed this with other reading glasses breakers, losers etc. We all say that you look a bit camp with reading glasses on a chain, plus we could still misplace them once taken off. 🧐

You should keep them in a decent case, not in your coat pocket!

I'm blind in my right eye, so I only need one eye glass, not two. I have two pairs of binoculars, but I'd be better off with a telescope! It might sound sad to some only having one working eye, but I only have to buy one contact lens a month, not two! Every cloud has a silver lining! As they say.🧐

Ah, in that case a monocle seems less unusual. Or a monocular, eye loupe, 1000mm telephone lens, etc.
