Re-reading "What's Tha Up To Nah!?"

The memoirs (vol 2?) of a Police Officer in 1960s Sheffield (primarily Attercliffe)
A very different world

In one chapter, he describes how he was going to arrest a man for a vicious assault on an old man (leaving what are now referred to as 'life changing injuries)
The perpetrator was in a pub, & threw a cleaver at the PC, it missed, but another pub-goer hit the thrower with a bar-stool after realising that this was the guy who assaulted the old chap
A group of regulars 'detained' the offender, whilst the PC (as he wrote, wiped a speck of dust out of his eye.........)

I've personally known of one similar instance a few years ago (maybe around 2000 - 2001), where a dog-handler was tracking someone, the dog located & 'held'
Scrote kicked the dog a couple of times
Dog let go
He ran
Dog got him again

Officer noticed that his boot-lace was untied, so had to (on grounds of his own safety) stop to retie it

Scrote got 'chewed':okay:
Of course, when he was brought in, we were all full of sympathy, & made enquiries about the condition/health

I like that type of book, people doing ordinary jobs in the twentieth century, I'll have to give it a go.

Not this book, it's the novelisation of the film Total Recall. PKDs short story "We can remember you wholesale" is the original work he wrote that the film (and this book) is based on.

Reminds me, I need to read "The man in the high castle" soon which is another PKD book.

A scanner darkly is one of my favourite books, shame the film was so dire

I just searched for it and there is a follow up "What's Tha Up To Next?: More Memories of a Yorkshire Bobby". Reserved a copy of the 1st one at the library.

Let me know, what you think

I read Bob Mortimer’s auto biography on holiday.
He’s had such an interesting life with great trauma and great happiness.
I think he over credits Jim Moir aka Vic Reeves with his success.
Vic definitely had the vision to start it off, but without Bob, Vic never would have reached mainstream appeal, as Bob is clearly the one with a more natural wit.

Currently half way through The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith. The 6th book in the series. Love her or hate her, these books are rather fun and an absorbing read. They are well written and I like the characters.

Must get around to reading these!

I figured it was going to be ok within the first couple of chapters of book 1. Of course I thought Robert was a real person then, not a nom de plume. The characters jump out of the page at you. So beautifully created that you can see and feel the weave of Strike’s coat and the stubble on his chin. Robin seems like a real person too. I can hear her voice in my head. Heard it long before Sue Tully did a good job bringing them to the TV.
