If the old residue is merely unsightly not lumpy then don't worry about it. If it is sticky it may even help with the adhesion of the new tape. My tip is take your time and look all the way around the bar as you tape so the end result overlaps evenly all the way around.
it was bumpy as well - some of the old (foam?) tape had stayed put so it had to come off. just at the point of sorting the position of the bars, levers etc having fitted a new stem as well - one time a turbo trainer comes it really useful!

Not sure from your avatar whether you are a gurl or just an admirer of same but the nasty stuff used to remove nail polish should do the job. I found the most useful advice was to see that the sticky strip on bar tape is not made from Araldite and so you get more than one go to get it just right.

Both and I thought it was time I made my 'sex' more apparent to CC'ers. Obviously it has not worked 100%. ;)
don't have nail polish remover though, don't use the stuff - you're more likely to find me putting up a tent, cleaning/destroying/dismanteling my car/bikes/computers and you will never ever find me looking at that stuff called make-up. hate the stuff, cam cream is more more style!

part way there - any thoughts.
I have not finallised the inside edge yet (so simply taped on and not cut straight yet) and need to take my cross levers into account (for those not in the know, I don't have full use of my left arm/hand and find the sti lever side of life on the brakes almost impossible to actually bring the bike to a halt with)... oh and the bars are much more level than the photo suggests honest

oh - that was the first attempt, I am suspecting the second attempt on the otherside is going to be harder!^_^

all done and dusted - so thank you guys (& gals?) much appreciated. The change came about as a result of Rob3ert selling me some narrower bars and a stem better suited to what I needed.
Could not quite get the gel logo's on the tape to match, but think it will probably get replaced with plain black electrical tape before long (round about the next time I raid my step-father's garage for bits, I don't have any of it yet!) I will also replace the white cable ties with black ones once I raid my step-father's garage. The coss levers are off centre, it helps to balance out the brakes when I try to use the rear one with my bad hand (I also cut the brake cable sheath in the wrong place and don't have any spare of that either!).

End product from a cyclists point of view - touch cramped for the lights, but I have to live with that one. I might just be able to get the cyclo computer on the stem when it gets back from wiggle under warranty.

Now to go and eat before I start on bike number 2. that one is easier though, just a stem and pannier rack onto the n+1 mtb that arrived in the household last weekend.

thanks all. it seems today's project is fast coming unstuck unlike the old tape on the new bars.
I can't come up with a single thing in the house that will get the old sticky glue off and no shops around me that will sell anything.
The only thing I have that approaches an alcohol based substance is some very nice 15 year old solera resever Glenfiddich whisky. seems we have not yet replaced our meths supply and I'm out of ideas as to what else I can try which is saying something for an organic chemistry PhD drop-out! usually I am exceptionally good at disolving things, but seems not today. It's not Friday 13th is it?
A glass or two and the bar tape wouldn't have seemed so important
Good job with the taping.

Well, did you figure of eight the shifters or.....

Looks good.

still feeling the effects of yesterday's 1/5l hot toddy around 11:30pm. think there may well have been more than a glass or two in it!
(yet another asthma attack during the night - if you see me on here in the early hours it is usually the cause and I will have that hot toddy to hand!)

thanks

:surrender:
why is life never easy - can I scream please?
the new 2nd hand mtb does not have oversized bars so the stem from my road bike won't clamp around the bars!
just measured the bars where they clamp on and they are 28mm wide not 31mm wide! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh:angry: now needing either yet another stem or new bars... bar humbug - that whiskey had better be ready for another sleepless night!

Edit: rant over.

That looks fine to me. I have to do the same thing to my bike, just got my new tape today.I think mine is put on with bar tape that doesn't have the sticky backing and that is the type I bought to replace it with as well. If there is sticky residue on the bars I will start with mineral spirits and move up to gasoline if the mineral spirits do not remove it. I have a feeling either of them will remove the old glue.

Looks fine to me , i had to do mine last night as i shredded the tape when i fell off the other day... took longer to get the old lot off as i had double wrapped it as i was to lazy to take it off last time and i ended up using a scalpel to get it off .
