Re-taping drop bars

OK - Friday afternoon's project is to fit the new (narrower) handlebars on my roadbike.

Last time I had to retape bars I was in my teens - so half a life time ago, so having looked on youtube and found plenty of results, and also searched here and found way too many results, can anyone please give me a link to a good site that will show me...

thanks

thanks all. it seems today's project is fast coming unstuck unlike the old tape on the new bars.
I can't come up with a single thing in the house that will get the old sticky glue off and no shops around me that will sell anything.
The only thing I have that approaches an alcohol based substance is some very nice 15 year old solera resever Glenfiddich whisky. seems we have not yet replaced our meths supply and I'm out of ideas as to what else I can try which is saying something for an organic chemistry PhD drop-out! usually I am exceptionally good at disolving things, but seems not today. It's not Friday 13th is it?

Just tape over it, no need to clean it.

White spirit?
don't have any in the house - we sold everything to cycle around the world and are only just setting things back up again, so buy when needed, only right now I can't buy it because I have neither a bike in one piece, any cash or anywhere nearby I could buy it from and have decided to wimp out on a 12-15 miles bike ride in the rain to purchase something with card...

regretfully I am a perfectionist, we are not known for short cuts or taking the easy path in life.
I found some Zoff in my first aid kit which has done the trick nicely.
I'm not, so I'll take your word for it. Have you decided on which taping method you are using yet. I'd be most interested in which you decide is the perfect method.

If the old residue is merely unsightly not lumpy then don't worry about it. If it is sticky it may even help with the adhesion of the new tape. My tip is take your time and look all the way around the bar as you tape so the end result overlaps evenly all the way around.
