I know there are some peeps on here who find time for wa*king as well as cycling.

My nine-league winter boots suffering catastrophic failure (in Austria last week, on holiday, if you would like to know). They are extremely comfortable and there is plenty of wear left in the uppers.

Has anyone had their boots re-soled? I realise it will be expensive, somewhere in the region of £50 for a proper job, but a new pair of boots would be well over £100, and then they have to be broken in.

A search on tinternet has led me to a place in Wold, where I could post them. I am trying to find somewhere closer to home. Any suggestions please?

So they've haddock have they. Don't know, all the places I've seen, required the boot to be sent away. A friend had it done to his boots and he was happy with it. That was some years ago. He sent them away. Seem to remember the Wold was mentioned.

Yeah, as normal, cobblers seems to be the best answer! ;)

You might want to drop one of the repairers a line first to see if your model actually are repairable. Depending on the sole unit this might not be the case.

I recently had a pair of Zamberlan Trek Lites repaied by Feet First. I worked out pretty expensive as I had worn a hole in one leather heel lining too. They seem to have done a really good job, replacing the entire sole unit and relining the heels. But at a cost - £70 for the work (£50 for just resole) and a total a of £15 P&P there and back. If you want rands re attaching teh prices goes up again!

It is slightly cheaper to just retread rather than resole - it looks to me like lsr offer retreads, but I may be wrong. But obviously then you are continuing with your existing midsole which has probably given during the years of wear.

For me personally the £85 total spent was just about acceptable given that my boots cost about £140 five years ago and the uppers were perfect despite a lot of hard use.

Chris, I have just taken another good look at the damage. You might be right about the retreads. The bit of rubber with the grippy bits is about three eights of an inch thick.

On both boots, along the part where it joins the heel, whatever attached the grippy bit to the main part of the boot has perished. I can see crumbly bits of rubber ? between the two layers.

The Rand, (band that goes round the boot) is intact but crumbly material is coming apart easily. Does any of that description make sense?

There is an excellent Outdoor Shop near here, where the people know what they are talking about, as opposed to "just" selling things. I know that it will cost a lot to mend them, but as they are so comfortable, I wish to find out if that can be done. A new pair will cost perhaps £150.

I suggest you send an email with some digital pictures to Feet First. The guy I spoke to on the phone, also called Chris, knows his stuff. He was happy to discuss the options with me regardless of whether they would get the work as they recognise that the repair is not always economic. They are happiest if they can look at a picture though.
